About the Enid Haupt Garden
The Enid A. Haupt Garden is on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution between the Smithsonian Castle and Independence Avenue, and is adjacent to the National Mall. The garden is named in honor of Enid Annenberg Haupt (1906-2005), an avid gardener, philanthropist, and supporter of the arts.
Landscape architect Lester Collins designed the garden space and it was opened to the public in 1987. The garden is approximately 4.2 acres in size and features a variety of distinctive elements:
-
Parterre: The central feature of the garden is a beautiful parterre, which is a formal garden with intricate geometric patterns. It consists of symmetrically arranged flower beds, low hedges, and gravel paths. The parterre is adorned with seasonal flowers and offers a visually striking display.
-
Moongate Garden: Adjacent to the parterre, the Moongate Garden is inspired by traditional Chinese gardens. It incorporates elements such as a circular moon gate, a small pond with water lilies, and various plants and trees that evoke a serene and contemplative atmosphere.
-
Fountain: At the center of the garden, there is a large circular fountain adorned with bronze sculptures. The fountain provides a refreshing focal point and adds a soothing element to the garden's ambiance.
-
Terrace Gardens: The Enid A. Haupt Garden includes two terraces that offer different perspectives and views. The lower terrace provides a tranquil setting with benches, shade trees, and a small reflecting pool, while the upper terrace offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the Smithsonian Castle and the National Mall.
